Clinical neuropsychological research

Clinical neuropsychological research at our clinic focuses on neuropsychological parameters (e.g., attention, memory, executive functions) in various neurological patient groups (e.g., patients with dementia, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders).

Selected projects

International Neurocognitive Profile (INCP) and patients with Subjective Cognitive Decline (SCD) and Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) (contact: neuropsychologie_screening@meduniwien.ac.at)

Dementia is one of the main causes of impairment and dependence in older people. In order to apply successful prevention strategies to delay dementia development at an early stage, early identification of patients at risk is necessary. This necessitates the development and use of new, reliable and valid methods for early dementia detection. Currently, the International Neurocognitive Testprofile (INCP) is being developed in collaboration with the Medical University of Vienna (www.psimistri.com). The INCP is a tablet-based neuropsychological test battery and includes various neurocognitive tasks in the areas of attention language, learning and memory, executive function.

Iron ring lesions and neuropsychological functions (cooperation with Dr. Assunta Dal-Bianco).

MS patients with and without iron-containing macrophage walls around MS lesions in the form of iron rings (ER), visualized by 7 Tesla MRI, will be investigated regarding their cognitive changes over 6 months. The aim is to get closer to the clinical significance of these iron rings.

Cognitive dysfunction during acute inflammation in multiple sclerosis: cognitive relapse or mere sickness-behavior? (cooperation with Dr. Tobias Monschein)

Cognitive domains and the affective state will be studied in patients with MS during an acute relapse as well as in a stable phase. The question of the phenomenon "cognitive deficits" in MS will be discussed with regard to differential diagnosis, disease progression, and prediction.

Cognition & Emotion in multiple sclerosis (cooperation with Prof. Dr. Karin Zebenholzer)

In a longitudinal study, patients with multiple sclerosis are comprehensively assessed with respect to information processing abilities and the corresponding electrophysiological correlates.

Cognition & Emotion in Childhood Multiple Sclerosis (Cooperation with Prof. Dr. Barbara Kornek)

In a longitudinal study, patients with infantile multiple sclerosis will be comprehensively examined regarding their information processing abilities and the corresponding electrophysiological correlates.

Decision Making Behavior in Alcohol Dependence (Cooperation with Prof. Dr. Henriette Walter)

In a cross-sectional study, different forms of decision behavior and the corresponding electrophysiological correlates as well as their correlations with various neuropsychological parameters are recorded in hospitalized patients with alcohol dependence.
