Prof. Roland Beisteiner and his research group focus on development of novel non-invasive ultrasound-based approaches for brain stimulation therapy. They developed Transcranial Pulse Stimulation (TPS; first described in 2019). This technique uses targeted, ultrashort ultrasound pulses to selectively stimulate specific brain regions, promoting regenerative processes and enhancing brain function. TPS is approved as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease and has already been established in more than 200 research and treatment centers worldwide.
Another major focus is the development of imaging-based non-invasive methods for the assessment of brain function. The group performed the first functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) examination in the Alpine region and pioneered the development of clinical diagnostic fMRI, particularly in the field of high-field imaging.
